Hedge Trimming: The Details Homeowners Ask For

- The cedar rule
- Never cut into bare brown wood on an eastern white cedar. It has no dormant buds there and will not regrow, so a hedge cut past the green stays bare permanently.
- Best time of year
- A first cut in June once the spring flush hardens, and a tidy-up by late August. Stop by early September so new growth has time to harden before frost.
- Nesting birds
- Hedges are prime nesting habitat and active nests are federally protected. Between April and August we check the hedge before the shears go in.
- Shape
- Cut slightly wider at the base than the top so light reaches the bottom. A hedge trimmed straight up and down thins out and goes bare at the bottom within a few seasons.
- Typical job length
- Two to four hours for a standard residential run. Tall cedar hedges along a full property line take a day.
- What is left behind
- Clippings raked and hauled, the line strung and cut level rather than eyeballed.
Bringing an overgrown cedar hedge back
A cedar hedge that has been left for years has a green shell over a hollow brown interior. Sunlight never reaches the inside, so the foliage there dies off and the live growth ends up in the outer few inches. Cutting the hedge back to the size you wish it were exposes all of that brown, and it does not come back.
The recoverable route is the top and one side at a time, over several seasons. Take the height down first, let the sides fill in, then take one face back the following year and the other face the year after. Slow, and it keeps a hedge alive that a single hard cut would kill.
Where the hedge is beyond that, replanting beats rescuing. A new cedar hedge at 1.5 m catches up with a butchered one within a few years, and you get to correct the spacing and the soil while the ground is open.
One legal note on a hedge along a property line: if it turns out the stems sit on the boundary itself, it is jointly owned under the same Forestry Act rule that governs boundary trees, and taking it out is not a one-owner decision.

How often should hedges be trimmed?
Most formal hedges look best with one to two trims a year — typically early summer and again in early fall. Fast growers like privet may want more.
Why is my cedar hedge going brown?
Often from cutting back into old bare wood or shearing too flat. We shape with a healthy taper so light keeps the whole plant green.
Can you reduce the height of a tall hedge?
Yes, within limits for the species. Some hedges can be brought down hard; others need staged reductions to stay healthy.
Do you take away the clippings?
Always — all clippings are collected and hauled away as part of the job.
Can you shape ornamental shrubs too?

My cedar hedge is brown inside. Can it be cut back to size?
Not in one pass. Cedars have no dormant buds in bare brown wood, so anything cut past the green foliage stays bare for good. An overgrown hedge comes back over three or four seasons by reducing the top and one side at a time.
When should hedges be trimmed?
June, once the spring growth has firmed up, with a light tidy by late August. Trimming into September pushes soft growth that winter burns.
Can you trim a hedge with a bird nest in it?
Not while the nest is active. Nesting birds are federally protected, so between April and August we check first and either work around the nest or come back after the young have fledged.
