Grinding vs. removal — and when you need the full dig-out.
Stump grinding is fast and great for most yards. But sometimes you need the entire stump and root ball physically removed — under a new foundation, pool, driveway, or major landscaping.
Full removal extracts the root ball and major roots, leaving open ground ready for construction or replanting. It’s more involved than grinding, so we’ll always tell you honestly which option your project actually needs.
Either way, you get a clear quote and a clean, level finish.
Choose full removal when
- Building over the spot (foundation, addition, pool)
- Installing a driveway, patio, or hardscape
- Major regrading or landscaping the area
- The root system is interfering with utilities
- You want zero chance of regrowth or rot
- Replanting a tree in the exact same spot

Stump Removal: The Details Homeowners Ask For
Straight answers on timing, permits, access, and what it costs you.
- Grinding or full removal
- Grinding chews the stump below grade and leaves the root plate. Full removal excavates the stump and main roots out of the ground.
- When full removal is the answer
- Anything being built on or dug through the spot: a footing, a pool, a deck, a driveway, a new service trench.
- Typical job length
- Half a day for one stump, longer where roots run under a walkway or a slab.
- Access we need
- Room for an excavator or mini loader, so roughly three metres of clear route and a driveway that takes the weight.
- Before we dig
- Utility locates, always. Excavation reaches deeper than grinding and the buried services matter more.
- What is left behind
- An open hole backfilled with clean fill or topsoil and tamped, ready for whatever comes next.
Why most yards only need grinding
Full extraction pulls a root plate the width of the old canopy out of the ground. That means an excavator, a hole big enough to swallow a car, truckloads of fill to close it, and disturbed soil that keeps settling for a year. It is the right call under a future footing and the wrong call for a lawn.
Grinding costs less, finishes in an afternoon, and leaves the surrounding soil structure alone. The roots that stay behind decay in place over several years and feed the soil while they do it. Nothing regrows from them once the buds at the collar are gone.
The exception is where roots and structure meet. Roots under a walkway will keep lifting slabs as they decay unevenly, and a builder pouring a footing cannot work around a root plate. That is a dig, not a grind, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying before the quotes come in.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us
What’s the difference between grinding and removal?
Grinding chews the stump into mulch below grade — fast and tidy. Full removal physically extracts the stump and root ball, leaving open ground for building or major landscaping.
Which one do I need?
For most yards, grinding is enough and cheaper. Choose full removal when you’re building, installing a pool, or regrading the area. We’ll advise honestly.
How big a hole does removal leave?
Larger than grinding, since the root ball comes out. We backfill and level it as part of the job.
Can you remove several stumps at once?
Yes — multi-stump jobs are common and usually more cost-effective per stump.
Is the ground ready to build on after?
We backfill and grade so the spot is workable, though your builder may still spec compaction for structural loads.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding cuts the stump into mulch 15 to 30 cm below grade and leaves the roots to decay in place. Removal excavates the stump and its main roots and leaves a hole to backfill. Grinding suits lawns and gardens; removal suits construction.
How long do the leftover roots take to rot?
Several years for a large tree, faster for softer species. They break down in place and improve the soil as they go. They do not resprout once the stump is ground below grade.
Do I need a permit to remove a stump?
No. Toronto’s tree bylaws protect standing trees, so a stump left after a lawful removal is not regulated. If the tree is still standing, the permit question applies to the removal, not the stump.
